Why are hashtags important?

Hashtags work by categorising the content we produce, making it discoverable to a much wider audience.

If you want to increase visibility of your business on social media and grow your followers, you need to consider your use of hashtags.

Here are my top tips…

  1. Use location-based hashtags to increase visibility and help target a local audience. eg #haslemerebusiness #godalmingcommunity #surreybusiness #surreylocal
  2. Use industry-specific tags to attract customers interested in your niche. eg #smallbusiness #localbusiness #marketingtips #marketingadvice
  3. Create a branded hashtag for your business and encourage your followers to use it. This gets community engagement and increases your visibility. eg. #TheMarketingLaunch
  4. Appearing on the Explore page of instagram is crucial. Engage with trending and popular hashtags to increase the likelihood of your content being featured. Engaging will also boost your online presence and follower growth.
  5. Don’t overdo it or you could appear spammy. Aim for a mix of popular, niche, and branded hashtags, usually around 5-15 per post. Remember quality over quantity.
  6. Observe which hashtags your competitors and industry leaders use. Incorporate those that align with your small business.
  7. Only use relevant hashtags, related to your content and industry. Avoid generic, unrelated or banned (yep, this is a thing!) tags.
